Vegan Nutella

Vegan Nutella toasts

I love Nutella, memories of being an over weight kid sitting in my hotel room in the south of France, gorging on Nutella and french bread come to mind!  However I usually try to avoid it as it is full of sugar and palm oil.  So I decided to try a healthier version.  Whilst my Nutella does contain a little maple syrup, there is no extra oil, salt, dairy or processed sugar. The amazing thing is that it tastes exactly the same as Nutella, but without the excessive sweetness.  So why not give it a try, it is super simple and contains only four ingredients!

Vegan Nutella

200 g whole hazelnuts

2 tbsp organic cacao (I used Navitas Naturals)

40 ml maple syrup


Roast your hazelnuts in the oven for 10 mins at 180 degrees.  Remove the nuts and place in a clean towel.  Roll the nuts in the towel to remove their skins, don’t worry if there are a few left.  Place your nuts in a powerful blender and blend for around 10 mins, until the hazelnuts have turned into a smooth creamy nut butter.  You will probably need to regularly scrape down the sides, see my almond butter post for more information.  Add the cacao and syrup and blend until thoroughly mixed.  You will probably have a large lump of Nutella, but don’t panic.  Slowly add a little water, teaspoon by teaspoon, until you have a Nutella type consistency.  You are ready to enjoy!
